The first time I’d heard about Nanowrimo, I thought it was a crazy idea. I mean, who on earth can write 50,000 words in one month? I heard about how hard it is, how people will meal prep for an entire month ahead of time so their family will survive.

Then a writing buddy talked me into trying it out with her, and this is what I found.

#1 Sprinting Saved The Day

By doing fifteen minute sprints, we both managed to get our writing done in about an hour give or take.

I was worried since I work in retail and November is always a crazy month. Every morning we would do 3 sprints. We averaged anywhere between 300 and 500 words per session. That meant at the end of the day, the pressure was off and we could finish up whatever we needed.

One tip I have for people is if you use a laptop, or pen and paper, keep it somewhere that you walk by often. I did this and every time I passed I’d sit and write for a few minutes before continuing on with whatever chore I was about to do. I was amazed at how quick the word count shot up.
