A Side Effect of Medium

For the last six months or so, my writing focus has been on Medium.

I had put my novels to the side, no longer worked on anything besides posts and short stories here. I think I needed a break.

What I was not expecting however, is how writing on Medium would change me and my writing.

I’ve been almost fanatic about making sure that each day I’ve gotten out of bed, hopped on the laptop, and started typing. Thinking about jumping back into a novel was almost terrifying. I couldn’t imagine going from posting a short tidbit to stretching out stories to last chapter after chapter.

One of my goals I know I have mentioned before was to be published.

I had to write a story for an anthology I’m part of. 8,000 words minimum. I procrastinated, worried that I wouldn’t be able to transition from Medium to an actual long story.

So, I put it off until I no longer could. With only forty-eight hours I was facing a decision. Bow out of suck it up. I pulled up my big girl panties and got typing.

The words flowed.

I did short sprints, 10 or 15 minutes long, with breaks in between.

In the past when I have done this, I’m tired of writing after about 3 or four sprints. The most I had ever written in a day was 2,000 words…
