Creating a Writing Space

Despite the fact that my life is pretty chaotic, I remain determined to get as much writing done as I can. The problem? How do you write when your surroundings are such a mess that you can’t concentrate on what you want to do?

Over the past two years we have been working on our house. We gutted it, rebuilt it and have had our two boys move in and out. Now as I struggle to get some words on paper, I look around and know exactly what is holding me back.

Chaos.

The only comfortable space I have to write right now is on my bed. My nightstand is cluttered, there’s laundry piled on the floor, I can’t find anything I need.

I need to quiet my surroundings.

I need a space that I can call my own were there are no distractions. My solution? I’m taking over one of my son’s rooms. He moved out about a month ago, and his room is a disaster. We let him paint the walls whatever color he wanted and he chose a dark blue. Needless to say, I will be repainting the room after I clean the mess out.

Under one of the windows I will have a desk with a shelf next to it to hold whatever materials I need. I will have a bulletin board on the wall to keep motivational quotes and notes posted that I can look over at.
