Despite The Size, This Garden Was Worth It

This is the first year on our new property and we’ve made significant progress on the land. The garden area is not ready yet, and won’t be until next spring, but we made do with what we had.

Our harvests have been small, but every time I go out and pick fresh veggies and melons, there’s a sense of satisfaction that grows inside me. I know it is a step in the right direction.

My twenty-year-old son lost his job last month due to transportation issues. A few days ago, I picked him up and brought him back to our house. We arrived around midnight and I was completely spent from the eight hour round-trip drive.

“Where’s the garden?”

I rubbed my eyes and set my purse down. “I’ll show you in the morning.”

“Come on, Mom. Show me now.”

As tired as I was, it thrilled me that he wanted to see it. With the flashlights on our phones lighting the way, I led him down into the backyard and showed him the first bed.

“These are the zucchini and squash plants.”

I watched as he squatted and dug through the massive leaves with one hand until he found one he could pick. With a twist of his hand, it snapped off and he stood back up.
