Electrified Love
She walked slowly through the patch of dying weeds, running her fingers along the cold metal of the chain link fence. The inside of her fingers were completely calloused from doing this so often she no longer registered the rough surface as her hand skittered over the metal.
Kylie paused in her pacing. How many times was this? How many days had she stood in this very position, staring through the metal criss-crosses at where her love was buried? Kylie turned and continued her pacing.
A group of teenagers gathered in a huddle down by the gate. Their whispered words drifted in and out of the breeze blowing, but Kylie could imagine what they were discussing. Once upon a time, she’d been part of a group like that; daring each other to cross that forbidden line.
Pulling her hat down over her ears, Kylie stood and waited. After a few minutes, one of the girls vehemently shook her head and backed away while the other kids laughed and followed her. When the group disappeared around the corner, Kylie started moving again.
She’d begged and pleaded with Nick’s parents to choose somewhere else. She didn’t care where, just not here. Kylie stared through the fence at the headstones in front of her. An older couple trudged on the sidewalk behind her. As they passed, the woman shivered.
