Garden Woes, or Garden Lessons?

This was my first year on our new property and I had big hopes for my garden. Life didn’t cooperate though. My garden was not what I hoped for at all, and there were moments of huge disappointments and struggles.

First, let’s look at the problems.

The space we decided to put a large garden had to be cleared. About ten large trees were cut down along with about fifty really small ones. Great, right? No. There are still the ten large stumps that are sticking out of the ground and in the way of creating the garden space.

When we bought the property, it had sat abandoned for about twenty years. The entire area was a jungle. Large vines grew everywhere, reaching up twenty feet tall to grab a hold of the tree branches.

My husband went and bought herbicide and sprayed the entire yard numerous times.

My heart died a little every time. The bright side would be that next year, it won’t be so bad that we will have to do that again. By next year, I won’t have to worry about what I plant where.

Because of this, there were only a few places around the 1 acre we have cleared that I could plant.

Another problem was, because the garden area wasn’t ready, I needed to come up with some cheap…
