Gardening In The Heat Of The Summer
Isn’t it inviting to garden when you see pictures like the one above?
The truth is far from picture perfect though. Even in spring, when the temperature hasn’t yet climbed, how often is it that you do your hair to perfection, pick out some cute earrings, dab on some makeup and then sit in the garden without getting tired, dirty and sweaty?
During the spring, the excitement for the garden is high. You happily plant your seeds and plants and for the first couple of months you stay diligent about keeping the weeds down, the plants growing, and you look forward to the day your hard work pays off.
Then, by mid-July the excitement wears off. The summer heat is upon you, and the thought of going out in the heat of the day to tend to your garden makes you cringe.
Right now, at nine in the morning, our heat index is 97 degrees.
It made me really wonder how people used to survive when they HAD to garden in order to feed their family. How did they manage to take care of large gardens through the summer and stay on top of everything?
The difference between then and now is that back then, they didn’t have a choice. There was no point in whining and complaining, they just went ahead and got it done because they had a family to feed.
