When the world around me is ugly and hateful, I go to the one place that gives me a sense of peace and beauty; my garden.

There’s something special about using your fingers to dig in the dirt and plant a seed. You pat the dirt on top, and give it a healthy drink of water and sit back.

It’s almost a leap of faith.

You can’t see what is going on underneath the dirt. You don’t know if what you are doing is keeping that seed happy and healthy, but you keep it moist and have faith that eventually, life will emerge.

After days go by, you once again check the patch of dirt and see a little spot of green and your spirit soars.

You’ve done it!

Day after day, you patiently take care of that little seedling, nurturing it. You make sure it has food and water, air and sun. You protect it from drenching rains and tie it up from damaging winds.

After what seems like eternity, a small bud begins to form. And for over a week, you watch that bud grow and grow, anticipating what it will look like.

My garden is my escape.

Despite what is going on in the world, when I walk into my garden my senses come alive and my anxiety disappears.
