Holiday Magic

There is a certain magic that surrounds the holiday season that is hard to explain.

Once the chaos of Thanksgiving is over, Christmas lights glow in the darkness of the night. Driving down the five-mile long road to our house, it is sparsely populated. Most lots are between five and ten acres and so houses are not right next to each other.

Usually, on my drive home, without any street lights, the drive is pretty dark and lonely. Occasionally there will be this low rolling fog that belongs only in scary movies. It gives the area a sense of forbidding doom.

But, now Thanksgiving is over and the drive is peppered with Christmas lights hung along the fence lines. Lit nativity scenes decorate front yards and inflatable snowmen dance in the breeze.

Even inside the house is magical. The Christmas tree is erected and the family gathers together to go through the boxes of decorations. Lights are strung and ornaments placed.

But the true magic comes from within. For the most part (unless something else is going on) people around me seem to be happier, more loving. There is a deeper sense of family and appreciation. Sure, gifts are wrapped and there’s excitement as to what you are going to get, but that’s not the best part for our family.
