How To NOT Make Money On Medium
When it comes to making money on Medium, I think I’m kind of the poster child for what NOT to do.
Don’t write consistently.
I’m actually doing better at this. When you don’t write and post consistently, your stats plummet and it’s almost like you have to start over. Your fans have moved on to other writers.
In order to make money here, your name needs to be familiar to the people who follow you, and even those who don’t. Without posting regularly, your pieces will drown in the ocean of writing here.
Don’t find a niche.
Readers tend to find writers that focus on a topic that they are interested in. Finding a niche and sticking to it will earn you a fan base that will seek out your name to find your writing.
I don’t have a niche. I write whatever is on my mind whether it has to do with relationships, family, gardening, writing, etc. What does that mean? It means that just because a person may like one of my posts, doesn’t mean they will even click on any of my others. There’s no follow through.
Even though making money is nice, my writing comes from within, and I’m not going to give that up just to make money.
