The Importance Of Having An Emergency Fund

When I first moved to Florida from the west coast, my family freaked out that we might die in a hurricane. When you don’t live in a place that’s affected by hurricanes, the only thing you really see is the aftermath of the worst of the storm. You don’t comprehend the entire storm.

Our first hurricane we had the joy of going through was hurricane Sally in 2020. When hurricane season started in June, we kept a watch on NOAA so that we would have as much warning as possible when it came to hurricanes. Usually you have about a week to prepare and make decisions as to how you are going to respond. A week to stock up on what you need if you’re going to stick it out in place, or a week to decide where you are going to go to seek shelter during the storm.

Our house is surrounded by three very large oak trees and my husband and I sat through the night, listening to the wind howl and the windows rattle. My heart jumped as we heard trees come down outside. We took turns going from window to window to check on the oak trees that could take out our entire house.

All-in-all it was about five hours of extreme anxiety.
