This journal entry comes from my main character in my new novel, Cecilia Thompson, before the beginning of the novel. It was kind of fun to get in her head and write down what she was thinking before she made the decision to go search for her long-lost family.

My head is throbbing and I think I’ve cried a gallon of tears. Watching them lower his casket at his funeral brought me to my knees. I can’t believe he’s gone. Now, it’s only Izzy and I left. How do we go on without him?

And the letter he left behind? Don’t even get me started on that. It keeps me awake at night knowing that they lied to us our entire lives. How could they? It’s like the ultimate betrayal. But then, guilt eats at me for even being angry at him. He’s gone and can’t defend his actions and decisions.

So, now what?

I can’t fight with Izzy over this. Not now anyways. The hurt is too fresh, but knowing that we might still have family left? How can I let that go without doing as he asked? I also don’t understand how Izzy is okay with moving forward without getting all these questions answered.

And how dare them for keeping our family a secret from us? Now he wants us to go find them? It makes me wonder exactly what happened to cause such a rift…
