Medium Mysteries

Now there have been a lot of people on Medium who have done whatever they could to figure out the algorithm that Medium uses in order to figure out how people get paid.
I’m not going to even attempt that.
It got me wondering though. Who are my followers? So, I took a look.
I recently broke the 400 followers mark. I know, that small potatoes compared to a lot of people. So far, I’m please with my number. But upon closer look, half of my followers haven’t been active for months. Who knows if they will return or not.
That means I’m down to about 200 in which to reach with my writing. But, out of those 200, over half have never (and I do mean NEVER) clapped for a single one of my stories. I don’t know if they’ve read any and just not liked them, but then why follow me?
So, that drops me down to 100 followers.
Out of those followers, about 20 of them consistently read what I write, respond, and engage with me.
The question now is, what do I do with this realization?
Here’s my thoughts on the subject.
I can:
- Go through my list of followers, and actually make lists of who is active, who engages with me, and who is missing.
- Every day go through those people on the active list and make sure I read and clap for them consistently, hoping they return the favor
- Forget about the list and just keep writing.
I love Medium. I’m still working out some kinks, but looking at these numbers is pretty discouraging.
For now, I’m going with #3. I can only hope that as my number of followers increase, so do everything else.
I guess some mysteries were just not meant to be solved.
If you have any tips, suggestions, comments, I’d love to hear from you! Until then, I’m on to my next story. Happy Holidays.
