Prioritizing Projects

As a creative person, there are so many different projects running through my mind at any given time. Characters and stories war for room and push each other out of the way in order to get attention.

There are a few tricks that seem to help me keep my characters and projects in check and on track.

Find a Writing Partner

A writing partner can be online, or in real life. This partner I have found helps me stay accountable. Every single day, first thing in the morning, we talk and go over our schedule.

This entails mentioning what projects we want to work on, what tasks need to be accomplished. We come up with a plan of attack for the day. Then, throughout the day, we check in with each other to see how things are going.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found myself stuck. Perhaps a character isn’t doing what they are supposed to do, or I can’t come up with an idea for a flash fiction piece. My writing partner and I will bounce ideas off one another until one of them gives me that ‘aha’ moment. And when I stray? My partner stops me in my tracks, not allowing me to entertain the idea until I’ve at least worked on the current project.
