Showering In The Dark
Renovating an old house takes time and patience. We’ve learned a lot over the last few months. One of those things is that dimmer switches can be tricky.
The dimmer we bought, when dimmed to the lowest level, sometimes makes the light flicker a few times and then dim all the way off. This happened to me mid-shower last week.
I don’t know about you, but showers for me are a time to relax. I close my eyes and let the hot water hit my head and trickle down the rest of my body. Steam fills the room and covers the mirror.
When the light flickered that day and then went off, the room was cloaked in darkness. For a moment there was a sense of panic. Should I call out for someone to come turn the light back on?
But it was then that something occurred to me. A sense of peace and calmness floated over me. I closed my eyes, yet there was no difference. I no longer had to shut out the bright light in order to relax.
I stood still under the hot water and my eyes slowly began to adjust so that I could see the shapes of the things around me. I reached out and grabbed the bar of soap.
I’ll save you the boring details of the rest of my shower, but as I stepped out onto the bath mat, I realized that I dreaded opening the bathroom door and allowing light to flood into the room.
