Support Groups During a Pandemic?
Forget about it!
Over the past few months I’ve come to realize the horrible side effects of the nation shutting down.
Where I live, our state has been open for months and months. Masks are no longer required, bars and restaurants have been wide open. For an outsider looking in, seems great right?
That’s what I thought, but boy was I wrong.
One of my close friends had tragedy strike and I needed to get her to a NA meeting pronto. She was on the verge of throwing her sobriety away, and given what she had gone through, I couldn’t blame her a bit. Her sobriety was important though so I started doing the research.
It shocked me when I found out that ninety percent of all the support group meetings were only Zoom meetings.
That might work for some people, but there’s something deep about having in-person, face-to-face support. Staring at someone through a screen sitting on your desk is a far cry from a real-life meeting.
My friend also lives out in the country in an internet dead zone. No cell service, no internet. She doesn’t even own a computer. So Zoom meetings? Not going to work.
I also know her. She needs that human contact. She needs to look someone in the eye when talking to them and watch their…
