The Advantages Of A Backlist
I’ve been writing here on Medium for a few years now, and I have no intention of stopping anytime soon. For me, the money is an extra bonus, but posting on here, whatever I want, is what I love.
When it comes to the money though, I’ve noticed that at least half, if not the majority comes from articles I wrote in previous months. For example, let’s look at my August numbers.
I made a whopping $13.77. But, when I dig into those numbers, what I found was that the stories I wrote in August only earned me $6.97.
That means that without doing anything extra, I made $6.80.
September is going to be even better. Within the last few days, one of my articles that I wrote back in July has skyrocketed. I have no idea why, but I’m not complaining. This is the story I’m talking about:
So far in September, that story accounts for 90% of what I’ve made so far. Had I not had a backlist, and was only relying on what I had for the month, my numbers would be dismal.
I’m keeping that in mind as I get ready to start self-publishing. I believe that it will be a very slow build for me, but once I have that backlist in place, hopefully I can use that to increase my numbers instead of just relying on the last release.
So, if you are just starting out here on Medium and your numbers aren’t looking real good, keep going. Keep your head up and build up that backlist.
