The Rain Pours Down

As hurricane Ida approached the Louisiana coastline, over here in Florida we did what we could to prepare.

All we would get was heavy rain and a little wind. But, heavy rain here means that our carport floods. All the water runs down our two driveways heading directly towards the carport.

During most rain storms, we end up outside at one point or another digging out a trench around the carport, hoping to divert the water. Knowing heavy rains were coming our way, we decided to try something different.

“I’m building a water bump.”

“A water bump?”

“Yes. Kind of like a speed bump, but it’s not to stop speeding, it’s to stop water.”

So over the course of an hour or so we dug a trench across one of the driveways and down towards the backyard. We mixed sack after sack of concrete and filled our ‘water bump’ until it resembled what my husband had pictured.

We held our breath, hoping the rain would hold off a little longer and give the cement a chance to dry. As luck would have it, the rain held off.

And then the downpour began.

My husband jumped off the couch and shoved his feet into his flipflops.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m going outside?”

“Why?”

“To check on my water bump.”

So, here he is, standing in the middle of a downpour, staring down at his little bump.

He cracks me up sometimes, but I can’t knock the fact that his little bump worked. There’s still water pouring down from the other side of the driveway, but at least now half the water is diverted.
