Tips and Tricks For New Chicken Owners

I have dreamed about owning chickens for nearly a decade, and finally my dream has come true.

I’ve learned a lot since we first ordered our baby chicks, and thought I’d share my experience with you so that if you’re thinking about getting chickens for the first time, you won’t make the same mistakes we did.

#1 Rethink Ordering a Prefabricated Chicken Coop

There are two reasons for this.

We found one on Amazon that said it was large enough for up to twelve small chickens. It was $250 and since I wanted six chickens, it sounded like it would be perfect. We then spent $350 on a fenced in chicken run. It was nerve-wracking to spend so much money on this, but I was so excited. You’ll understand why you need to rethink this in just a bit.

Then it came to ordering some baby chicks.

#2 Be Completely Prepared For the Chicks as Soon as You Order Them

Now, there are a lot of hatcheries out there. My experience was through Tractor Supply with Hoover’s Hatchery.

Baby chicks are shipped out within 24 hours of hatching.
