Toxic relationships should be avoided at all costs, yet most of the time, a person doesn’t realize the relationship is toxic until they are already involved.

I’ve written about my brother’s issues and addiction before, but something happened yesterday to bring it all flooding back in my mind.

His older half sister contacted me and wants to get in touch with him.

Immediately I went into Mama Bear mode, and wanted to ignore her request. They share the same mother, and some of the same genetics. I knew that in the past she has struggled herself with addiction, and the last thing I wanted was for her to be in my brother’s life.

Now, some of you may be thinking, it’s his life and his decision; that I should stay out of it.

I’ve been his protector his entire life. That’s not going to change now. I would do anything I could out of love to keep him happy and safe. He is finally in a good place, working on getting his life back on track. The last thing I want is for something to derail him.

His half sister has the potential to do just that.

Before I made any decision, I called my sister. I told her my concern about it, and she agreed except for one thing.

My brother’s half sister is one of the success stories. Yes, she is a recovered…
