Treating Writing As A Business

At the beginning of 2021 I gave myself a goal, and in order to hit that goal, I was going to need to take my writing much more seriously.

I started with a budget.

I know I need to save enough money to live off for one year. I broke that down into monthly amounts that are being deposited out of every paycheck. Done.

I know I need to have a bit of a buffer, so that too was put into my budget. Each month, a certain amount of money goes into a separate account. Done.

But, in order to hit my goal, I needed to take my writing more seriously. If I’m going to build up my side income over the next 28 months, I needed to get going. I personally work well off of lists, so that’s what I did. On my list, I included things such as:

Writing

Editing

Marketing

Networking

Different sites to try out

Cover design

Critiquing

Freelancing

From that list, I prioritized what needed to happen the first year. Unfortunately, writing here on Medium has moved way down the list. I’ve tried everything over the past few months. Tried posting daily, tried increasing the amount of reading and interaction I have. I used to…
