Winter Gardening- Part 2

I dream about one day having a huge greenhouse where I can grow herbs and vegetables year-round, but until then, I have to improvise.

Living in a warm climate is wonderful, but we still have a few months of cold weather that we have to endure. During this time, I can’t stand not being able to garden.

I’m new to gardening in this area, and am trying to learn what will work best for me. I’ve tried several things so far: Wintersowing in milk jugs and soda bottles, sowing seeds in Jiffy seed-starting kits, and sprouting seeds in plastic bags.

Today I tried something new and I’m hoping that this way works because it was super simple and cheap.

At our big box store, I bought a package of 100 clear drinking cups for around five dollars. Using an Exacto knife, I cut holes in the bottom of six cups. I filled them about half way with potting soil (I don’t have seed starting mix) and sowed one tomato seed in each one.

Now, most things you read about seed starting say to sow 2–3 seeds per hole, but I know the germination for these seeds is excellent, so I’m only doing one. After giving them a little bit of water, it was time to cover the…
